A richly described exoticism defines McGivern's EXTRAORDINARY JOURNEY, a series of paintings of the Empty Quarter, a sparsely populated desert region of Oman.
The paintings were completed from memory following her driving trip through this area, a grueling clocking of 3,000 miles in eight days, retracing a treck British adventurer, Wilfred Thesiger, made by camel over 50 years ago. McGivern's acrylic paintings recount Oman's desert from a Canadian perspective, as she uses Canada's touchstone landscape paradigm to actually narrate an escape to a mythological Middle East.....
McGivern's paintings bespeak how one Canadian painter perceives a hot, exotic landscape, an unfamiliar opposite to our own frosty paradise. McGivern meets the formidable challenge of recounting a mysterious land strictly by memory and in an abstract, painterly language, an approach that is certainly far more complex and evocative than conventional travel documentary.
